This site was a good history lesson on the importance of the railroad in the development of our country. The golden spike is now at Stanford. The two railroads ran side by side after meeting for 250 miles until the politicians finally agreed where to join them. The kids earned another National Park Junior Ranger badge, but here it was called Junior Engineer!

This is a working replica of one of the two steam trains that met when the transcontinental railroad was completed here. The trains could go only 15 miles before they had to stop for water or wood.

Driving to the historic site, we saw the facility where the solid rocket fuel boosters for the space shuttle are made.
