At the Oconaluftee Visitor Center in the Eastern Smokies, we visited the Mountain Pioneer Farm. Different authentic buildings from the surrounding area have been relocated to one area to teach how the early mountain pioneers lived.
Refrigerators in the mountains were spring houses. Part of a stream was routed through a trough in the spring house and used to keep perishable food cool!
The flowering trees and wildflowers are kicking into gear. Trees include redbud, dogwood, forsythia, flowers include fire pink, dutchmen breeches, violets, and more.
Dinner is a bit more crowded with guests, but well worth it!
