PE for the day was a hike up a volcano in Craters of the Moon National Monument. The area is truly like going to another planet where a series of volcanoes and fissures covered hundreds of square miles with lava 2000 years ago.
Wonderful views of the volcanic area and older mountains.
There was a stiff wind on top where this volcano sticks up above everything else.
Molten lava made insulated tubes that emptied out after the flows finished. You can explore them here.
The smooth type of lava. The kids had to learn different things about volcanoes for their Junior Ranger badge.
Amazingly, there is already a wide diversity of life forms that have taken hold in this barren landscape.
